Glasgow Warriors claimed the 1872 Cup for the fourth straight year with a 21–3 victory over Edinburgh Rugby at Scottish Gas Murrayfield, sealing the series with two late tries and extending their unbeaten run through December. A brace from BKT Player of the Match Jamie Dobie and a close-range effort from George Horne ensured the trophy returns west along the M8 once again.

Chasing a 12–point deficit from the first leg at Hampden Park, Edinburgh started brightly under grey skies in the capital. Pierre Schoeman’s work at the breakdown earned an early penalty, and fly-half Cammy Scott showed composure from 35 metres to give the hosts a 3–0 lead after five minutes. His tactical kicking kept Glasgow pinned back in the early exchanges, while a key turnover from Liam McConnell on his own line preserved the advantage.

Glasgow, however, steadily grew into the game. Stafford McDowall’s running lines and Matt Fagerson’s direct carrying began to stretch Edinburgh’s shape, forcing the home defence to scramble. A turnover from Fagerson in his own 22 and sharp interventions from Kyle Steyn and Ollie Smith kept the contest tight as both teams tested the fringes without reward.

The breakthrough came just past the half-hour mark. With Edinburgh blitzing hard, Adam Hastings stepped back inside before hanging a cross-field kick into space for Dobie to collect and finish in the corner. Hastings added the extras for a 7–3 lead. Dobie then produced a crucial defensive moment before the interval, tracking back to gather a Ben Vellacott grubber and beating multiple defenders to clear under pressure, helping Glasgow retain their four-point advantage at the break.

The second half opened as an arm-wrestle, defences refusing to buckle under the floodlights. Edinburgh were handed a lifeline when Angus Fraser was yellow-carded following an off-field review for a dangerous tackle, but a malfunctioning set-piece undermined their momentum. A close-range maul was repelled by the 14-man Warriors, and repeated scrum and lineout errors halted promising platforms.

As the sin-bin expired, the Glasgow bench injected control and tempo. With 10 minutes remaining, sustained pressure inside the Edinburgh 22 saw Horne spot the smallest of gaps, diving under bodies to score before converting his own try for a 14–3 lead. Edinburgh’s late push evaporated moments later when turnover ball allowed Glasgow to chip behind the defence; Dobie accelerated through to claim his second of the match, with Dan Lancaster landing a touchline conversion to complete the scoring.

The final whistle confirmed a first Glasgow win at Murrayfield since 2022 and a perfect end to their 2025 calendar year. Edinburgh, by contrast, will reflect on a performance of early promise undone by a lack of precision in key moments.

Glasgow now look ahead to 2026 and their New Year’s opener against Zebre Parma, while Edinburgh will regroup as they aim to turn competitive spells into tangible results.

All roads lead to Scottish Gas Murrayfield this Saturday for a momentous double-header of intercity rugby that promises to be a defining day in the Scottish sporting calendar.

The Scottish capital prepares to host both the men’s and women’s professional sides from Edinburgh and Glasgow in a festival of rugby that spans across both Hive Stadium and Scottish Gas Murrayfield

This unique occasion provides a platform for the burgeoning Celtic Challenge while setting the stage for the dramatic conclusion of the oldest inter-district rivalry in the world: The 1872 Cup.

The action commences at midday at Hive Stadium, where Edinburgh Rugby’s women’s team welcome Glasgow Warriors women in Round 2 of the Celtic Challenge.

This fixture serves as a vital homecoming for the Edinburgh side following a challenging opening weekend on the road, where they fell short in a 34-7 defeat away to the Wolfhounds

In contrast, the Glasgow Warriors women arrive in the capital with momentum after securing a 17-36 bonus-point victory over Brython Thunder in Wales.

Acting as a fitting curtain-raiser to the 1872 Cup decider, interest in the fixture is high, with over 1,000 tickets already sold. Supporters are encouraged to book their places immediately, as the Hive Stadium Main Stand approaches capacity and a sell-out atmosphere is expected for this East vs West encounter.

As the final whistle blows at Hive Stadium, the focus shifts to the main bowl of Scottish Gas Murrayfield for the highly anticipated 1872 Cup decider at 3pm.

The men’s teams take to the field with the prestigious trophy hanging in the balance following a physical opening leg at Hampden Park last Saturday. Glasgow Warriors currently hold the advantage after a 24-12 bonus-point win in Glasgow, but with only 12 points separating the two sides heading into the return leg, the contest remains entirely up for grabs.

Edinburgh Rugby will be looking to overturn that deficit on home soil, buoyed by the prospect of a massive partisan crowd.

The scale of the event is reflected in the ticket sales, which have already surpassed the 30,000 mark. Edinburgh Rugby is once again targeting a gate of 40,000, as they aim to break their own derby record and create an unforgettable atmosphere for fans from both sides of the rivalry.

This double-header represents more than just two games of rugby; it is a celebration of the East versus West rivalry across both the men’s and women’s games.

With both Hive Stadium and the national stadium filling up rapidly, fans are urged to secure their tickets early to ensure they are part of what is set to be a landmark day for rugby in Scotland.

A number of Scotland internationals return to the starting XV, with wingers Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe headlining eight changes for the historic derby. Both bring proven international quality back into the domestic arena as preparations continue across the Scottish game.

They are joined by fellow Scotland forwards Pierre Schoeman, Grant Gilchrist, Dylan Richardson, and Magnus Bradbury, all of whom were rested last weekend and now return to action. Their inclusion adds significant experience and leadership to the contest, with Bradbury captaining the side.

Hooker Ewan Ashman also starts after making an impact from the bench in last weekend’s Investec Champions Cup fixture away to Castres, continuing a run of strong involvement for players in the national picture.

Up front, 19-year-old tighthead Ollie Blyth-Lafferty reaches a significant milestone with his 1872 Cup debut, packing down with Ashman and Schoeman in the front row. Scotland stalwart Grant Gilchrist, now a double centurion for his club in the second row.

The back row is completed by blindside Liam McConnell, returning international Dylan Richardson, and captain Magnus Bradbury, giving Scotland coaches another opportunity to assess depth and combinations in a high-pressure environment.

While the 1872 Cup remains rugby’s oldest inter-city rivalry, the fixtures also play a key role in the wider Scottish Rugby landscape, offering high-intensity competition and valuable minutes for international players as Edinburgh chase vital BKT United Rugby Championship points. The return leg will be played at Scottish Gas Murrayfield next weekend (Saturday 27 December, kick-off 3pm).

A Fixture with Deep Roots

The origins of the 1872 Cup date back to Christmas Day in 1872, when teams representing Edinburgh District and Glasgow District played the first recorded inter-city rugby match. That historic meeting marked the beginning of a rivalry that has grown for more than 150 years and remains one of the most anticipated fixtures in Scottish rugby.

To honour this tradition, the modern cup competition was reintroduced in 2007, linking today’s professional era to the amateur roots of the sport.

How the Competition Works

The 1872 Cup is typically contested over two legs each season, with one match played in Edinburgh and the other in Glasgow. The winner is decided by aggregate score across both fixtures — the team with the highest total points across the two matches raises the cup.

These matches usually take place around the Christmas and New Year period, adding to the sense of festivity, tradition, and fierce rivalry.

More Than Just a Game

While URC league points are on the line, the 1872 Cup represents far more than table standings. It is a battle for:

  • Bragging rights between Scotland’s biggest cities
  • Regional pride, reflected in the contrasting identities of the capital and the west
  • A place in history, as some of the sport’s finest Scottish players have battled in this fixture

Every season, the matches draw big crowds, create passionate atmospheres, and deliver moments that become part of Scottish sporting folklore.

Recent Trends and Dominance

Both clubs have enjoyed spells of success, trading victories in recent years and keeping the contest thrilling and unpredictable. Its competitive balance is a major reason the Cup continues to captivate supporters across generations.

Why It Matters Today

The 1872 Cup is more than a reminder of rugby’s past; it symbolises Scotland’s sporting culture and the continued growth of the professional game. For fans, it’s a celebration of tradition, rivalry, and the unique excitement of festive-season rugby.

As long as rugby is played in Scotland, the 1872 Cup will remain a highlight of the sporting calendar — linking generations and keeping one of rugby’s oldest rivalries alive.

The 2025/26 1872 Cup: Two Cities. Two Stadiums. One Rivalry.

The next chapter of this historic derby unfolds over two huge festive fixtures:

Leg 1 – Glasgow Warriors v Edinburgh Rugby

Leg 2 – Edinburgh Rugby v Glasgow Warriors

The Scotland international hooker will run out in front of over 35,000 fans for his hometown team, marking a special landmark for a player with an intrinsic connection with rugby in the capital.

Tickets are available for the game: click here to buy yours today.

Cherry – who takes the place of the injured Ewan Ashman – is one of four changes made to the starting lineup that lost out against Glasgow last week, with the capital side looking to overturn a 19-point deficit in the 1872 Cup.

Everitt names an unchanged back three, with Wes Goosen selected at fullback alongside Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe, the latter of whom fresh from earning his 100th cap.

Mosese Tuipulotu lines up at inside centre for his first start at Scottish Gas Murrayfield, with Matt Currie again at outside centre.

The capital halfback pairing is unchanged, with Ross Thompson (stand-off) and Ali Price (scrum-half) both starting against their former club.

Cherry is joined in the front row by D’Arcy Rae (tighthead) and Boan Venter (loosehead), who bagged a late brace of tries last time out.

Club double centurion Grant Gilchrist starts in the second row with Sam Skinner, the Scotland lock making his first league start of the season.

Ben Muncaster comes into the starting line up at number eight – taking the place of Magnus Bradbury who remains in concussion protocol – joining club centurions Jamie Ritchie and Luke Crosbie to complete the loose forwards.

Glasgow Warriors Head Coach Franco Smith has made two changes to the starting XV.

One of the changes comes in the front-row, as Gregor Hiddleston replaces Johnny Matthews to pack down between Jamie Bhatti and Zander Fagerson up front.

An unchanged second-row sees Scott Cummings and Gregor Brown paired once more in the engine room, the former having provided the assist for Glasgow’s fifth and final try at Hampden Park last time out.

The back-row is similarly unaltered, meaning Ally Miller and Matt Fagerson once again line up either side of Jack Mann, the number eight featuring in a Glasgow Warriors matchday 23 for the fifth successive fixture.

Jamie Dobie is the only change to the back-line that started last Sunday’s clash at Hampden, as the scrum-half – the beneficiary of Cummings’ assist for the fifth try last weekend – starts alongside Tom Jordan in the half-backs.

Sione Tuipulotu and Huw Jones continue as the centre combination, the latter having also touched down for a score in the first leg.

Kyle Steyn captains the side from the wing after returning from injury that saw him make more metres and beat more defenders than any other player last weekend – in addition to scoring a try of his own -, lining up in a back-three rounded out by Sebastian Cancelliere and Kyle Rowe.

Rory Darge returns to action after completing his return to play protocols following a head injury sustained against Toulon, the openside part of a six-two split of forwards and backs amongst the replacements.

Sam Talakai comes into the matchday 23 after missing out at Hampden last weekend, the Australian international joining Rory Sutherland and Grant Stewart as the front-row cover.

Alex Samuel wears the number 19 shirt, whilst Angus Fraser once again offers cover in the back-row for tomorrow’s clash.

The backs are covered by George Horne and Duncan Weir, the former rotating to the bench after starting at Hampden Park last time out.
